Moving Toward Zero Waste

Simcoe County wants your opinion on waste management. This weekend, CLEAN will show you how a future with no waste at all is a possibility.

Gordon McKay is down to one bag of garbage a month. Someday, he intends to reduce that to none.

The founder of Zero Waste Simcoe, McKay has spent the past several years thinking a lot about garbage. And he's convinced that, through a combination of the 3 R's and government initiatives holding producers responsible for the waste they produce, there's a chance that someday we as a society might not produce any.

"It's a hard thing to wrap your head around, but that's because we've grown up with waste," said McKay, who will speak at a Community Forum sponsored by the Clearview Eco Action Network on Saturday, February 6. "Waste is a byproduct of our lives - we buy something, we use it for an hour or a year or two, and we throw it away. OMB Rules MacIntosh Hearing Goes Ahead

Three days after Clearview Council voted to remove its support of the three-year-old MacIntosh settlement, the Ontario Municipal Board ruled that the deal should be revisited at the OMB.

The ruling came Thursday as a followup to a pre-hearing held late last year at which the Township argued that Doug MacIntosh's appeal should not be heard at the OMB since an original deal had been struck and should be honoured.
 
However, the Board did agree with the Township's position that matters of sewage allotment, a big part of MacIntosh's objection, did not fall under OMB jurisdiction. According to the ruling, the Board "will only rehear matters relating to the Conditions of Draft Plan Approval that it has the power to amend, ie. redline changes and phasing... the Board agrees with the Township that it is the responsibility of the Township to allocate sewage and water capacity to any particular development."
